Naturopathic Medicine-An Overview

naturopathic-medicine-ispNaturopathic medicine is a unique blend of  scientific knowledge with the traditional practices and natural forms of medicine. Dr. John Scheel  coined the term naturopathy in 1895 which was later bought by Bendict Lust, the father of U.S. naturopathy. Some people believe that Hippocrates, the Father of Medicine, was the first promoter of naturopathic medicine. Naturopathy considers the symptoms of the disease as warning signals of improper functioning of the body, and unfavorable lifestyle habits. It believes that the human body has an inherent power of self healing .Naturopathic medicines treat the underlying cause of the disease by stressing on prevention , treatment  and good health.

Naturopathic medicines considers the disease as a means and not an end in itself .The treatment varies from individual to individual, based on their physiological, structural, psychological, social, spiritual, environment and lifestyle factors. Naturopathic medicine follows a system that is in sync with nature to bring back people’s health.

Naturopathic Medicine-Underlying Principles

Naturopathic medicinNaturopathic medicine encourages the prevention  of diseases through healthy diet, lifestyle and  minimizing stress. Naturopathy uses substances we get from the nature, discourages  invasive methods, and supports natural healing. Naturopathy practitioners reject or minimize the use of  biomedicine , pharmaceutical drugs, ionizing radiation, and surgery.

Naturopathic medicine follows certain guidelines or principles. The first and most important one is to acknowledge and accept that every individual has an inherent self healing power within himself/herself. Naturopathy encourages or promotes that power. The treatment focuses on finding and removing the root cause of illness rather than curbing the  symptoms of the disease.

Naturopathy entrusts the doctor to take up the role of a teacher as well. In other words, naturopathic medicine aims to make the individual responsible for his/her health. Naturopathic physicians motivates the individual to think reasonably and bring about self-responsibility for health .When each individual takes up the responsibility to maintain good health it promotes the well being  of a community, state, nation and ultimately our world.

Naturopathic medicine appreciates the healing power of nature which is well structured and gifted by God. Naturopathic physicians gets under the hood to diagnose the root cause of the disease. It facilitates then to  eliminate any hindrance to the process of recovery, thus supporting the natural self healing process. Our physical health is closely related to our mental well being. Hence naturopathic medicines focus on spiritual development along with our physical health.

Naturopathic Medicine-Prospects

The members of medical community do not accept naturopathy or naturopathic medicine as it does not have enough scientific research or evidence and verifiable results for specific conditions. There are efforts to assess the efficiency and safety of naturopathic medicine  in case of a wide range of common diseases. The medical fraternity is trying to find out and  decide whether the availability of naturopathic medicine  will improve the health and well being of an individual in a cost-effective way. Though naturopathic  medicine is committed to the creation of a healthy world the risk factor in these types of treatment cannot be totally ruled out.
