Medical Technology –A Glimpse

It is a fact that the world is moving faster like never before. As medical technology moves forward with an exceptional speed and accuracy, many of us are left wondering in the lanes of outdated procedures that were normal till the recent past. When we take a look at the  future of medical technology ,the kind of treatment  and developments that are being developed, it seems almost unbelievable to even the medical practitioners . In the wake of  of health care reforms and a controversial medical device tax, medical technology companies are stressing more than ever on products that  are designed to provide cheaper, faster and  more efficient patient care.

Medical technology that could very well shape the future:

Simple Heart Surgery: Every year,100,000 people undergo open-heart surgery to replace heart valves. Medical Technology is in the process of developing a less invasive method. In case of  angioplasty, doctors enter the body through a groin vessel, thread tools and devices into the heart , and perform the operation watching live images from an echo cardiogram and x-ray machine. This procedure will make valve repair or replacement reasonable for sick patients who can’t handle the stress of open-heart surgery at the same time unwilling to be operated upon in the earlier method, thereby benefiting many. The procedure will be less painful, and the recovery time will be much quicker. The procedure is likely to be available in another 4-5 years and investigatory trials are under way.

Medical technology-anti bleeding jell Anti Bleeding Gel:  Veti-Gel, a cream-like substance that will instantly seal a wound and start the clotting process has been developed. This medical technology wonder creates a synthetic framework that imitates the extra cellular matrix, that helps cells in the body grow together. If this product becomes available in the market, it could save millions of lives, especially in war zones.

Needle free diabetes care: This will bring a smile to the faces of those who  need to draw blood for glucose testing, and take daily insulin shots .Apart from the high risk of infection from all that poking diabetes self are is painful in the literal sense. Continuous glucose monitors and insulin pumps are today’s best options for automating most of the complicated daily process of blood sugar management – but they don’t completely remove the need for skin pricks and shots. Medical technology is  going to replace the poke with a patch. A trans dermal biosensor which reads blood analytics through the skin without drawing blood is being developed . This medical technology device is similar to a  handheld electric-toothbrush that scraps a little bit of  the top-layer skin cells to put the patient’s blood chemistry within signal range of a patch-borne biosensor. The sensor collects one reading per minute and sends the data wirelessly to a remote monitor, triggering audible alarms when levels go out of the patient’s optimal range and tracking glucose levels over time.
New means to combat Asthma: There is good news for those suffering from Asthma. A new 30-minute outpatient procedure called bronchial thermoplasty is developed in medical technology. A bronchoscope, which is a flexible tube, is inserted into the mouth or nose and then directed into the lungs. Radio frequency energy is sent through a catheter which heats the airway around 150 degrees. In this way the amount of muscle in the air passage is reduced without bringing about long-term damage or any blemish. Reduced muscle invariably means there’s less chance of airway constraint or seizure. It is a great relief to the asthma patient who can breathe a lot more easily! It is expected to arrive in the market in the next 3-5 years time.

Medical technology -Electric UnderwareElectric Underwear: Strange ,it may sound ,nevertheless it is true that electric underwear really can save thousands of lives. Imagine a patient lying in a hospital bed for days, weeks, or months. They develop bed sores—open wounds formed by a lack of circulation and compressed skin. Trust me, bed sores can be deadly. Around  60,000 people die from bed sores and resulting infections every year, billions of dollars from the US medical industry. The electric underpants is also called Smart-E-Pants. It delivers a small electrical charge every ten minutes. Which has the same effect  as the patient moving on their own. Thereby ,it activates muscles and increases circulation in that area, and effectively eliminates bed sores, thus saving many  lives.

A Final Thought on Medical Technology

Medical technology is an  important area  that needs special attention because everyone becomes helpless when overcome by physical illness. In such situations people are left with no option but to seek medical intervention .The present day situation demands advanced medical  technology because everyday new diseases are cropping up which needs urgent medical attention.
