Health issues today

A host of new health problems can be attributed to our way of life, with its stress on information, automation, computerization, and globalization though it has made work easier and given us more leisure alternatives. Medical Practitioners are of the opinion that major health problems such as cardiovascular sickness, cancer, and dental sickness can be effectively treated if diagnosed at the right time. Modern health problems can be termed as lifestyle diseases or occupational hazards. Obesity is one of the main modern health issues. There is no particular precautionary measure available for being overweight other than developing a disciplined and healthy lifestyle.

Another health hazard faced by many at present is computer vision syndrome or CVS for short. Most of us spend a considerable amount of our waking hours before a computer. If you spend all day staring at a computer screen, you are at risk for CVS. The symptoms of CVS include headaches, dry, red, or burning eyes, blurred or double vision, trouble in focusing, difficulty distinguishing colors, sensitivity to light and pain in the neck or back. Ideally, the monitor should be placed at a level so that it’s directly in front of you to minimize eye movement. The lighting should be adjusted to remove any glare or reflections in order to ease eyestrain. You should try looking away from your monitor every 20 or 30 minutes and focus on a faraway object. Eye drops can be used to refresh your eyes!

Hearing Loss is yet another modern day woe. Young people are developing the type of hearing loss normally seen in much older adults. The villain in this context  is the ear bud or headphone used with many digital music players. The background music demands users to turn up the volume, often to 110 to 120 decibels, which is loud enough to cause hearing loss after using for more than an hour. Experts recommend reducing the volume and limiting the amount of time spent listening to music players to about less than an hour a day. Headphones that fit outside the ear canal are also recommended, as listeners don’t need to increase the volume.

Sitting at your desk for long hours is also harmful to your health. You can fall prey to E-thrombosis. It is the development of clots in the deep veins of a person who spends long hours in front of a computer without moving. To avoid e-thrombosis stand up and move around every hour, tap your toes while you work, try moving around to get equipment and supplies in your work area. Avoid crossing your legs while sitting at your desk, go for a quick walk during breaks.

Anxiety is a common mental condition in the present day life. We all have our share of worries, uncertainties, and fears, but too much concern about our life can lead to generalized anxiety disorder. The symptoms include restlessness, fatigue, irritability, impatience, difficulty concentrating, headaches, upset stomach, and shortness of breath. It can be treated with drugs, antidepressants, psychotherapy, or a combination of these. Few people also experience social anxiety disorder. They have a persistent and constant fear of being watched and judged by others and of doing things that will embarrass them. This fear will interfere with all their activities and can make it hard to mingle with ease in the society. There will be physical symptoms such as ,trembling, upset stomach, heart palpitations, confusion, and diarrhea. Social anxiety disorder is probably due to a combination of environmental and hereditary factors. Treatment often involves medication and psychotherapy.

The tools for working with the modern day health problems are not as particular and accurate as those that are available for the infected illnesses. The best way to combat the above issues is to review our lifestyle and make changes where required and to stop worrying about things which are beyond your control
